Should I sell my house in an election year?

To sell your house in an election year or not to sell – that is the question. And it’s actually a very common question.

Here is the reason people ask this question – a new President can come in and make changes that impact the value of your home or the market of homebuyers. As of the day this post is being written, there are candidates running for President who claim, among other things, to be “democratic socialists” and state that if they make it into office, they will have the US federal government take over large portions of the US economy. Without doubt, this would impact the housing market.

We also don’t know for sure what President Trump will do if he is re-elected, and sometimes Presidents can become unpredictable in their second term, since they know they will not need to win another election. Some are experiencing trepidation about that, and this can cause (and has caused in the past) ripples in the housing market.

If you have a house that you’d like to sell, there is a risk of holding out until later in the year to sell. Why? Because the economy is doing quite well at the moment and markets are optimistic, but depending on who survives the democratic primary and who ends up in the White House, things could be changing. What is more likely – that the changes will be positive to your home value or negative? Since markets are good right now, the odds are more likely that future changes will be negative.

We’d be happy to discuss all this with you and see if selling your home now (or later) is the right decision. Please take a minute to fill out our online form here, and we will contact you within 24 hours!
